One dead after tanker catches fire off Indonesia

Four others seafarers have been rescued, while the search continues for a sixth person

Search and rescue team in Tanjung Pinang attended location of Malaysia-flagged tanker Tiger Star

A SEAFARER has died following a fire on board a chemical tanker in waters between Indonesia and Malaysia, outside port limits.

Three other crew of the Malaysia-flagged Tiger Star (IMO: 9084891) are in hospital, while one was rescued by containership GSL Christel Elizabeth (IMO: 9280641), according to Joko Prayitno, a communications officer with the search and rescue team in Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing for a missing person, Mr Prayitno told Lloyd’s List.

The Tanjung Pinang search and rescue team was alerted to an explosion and fire on the 1994-built, 550 dwt vessel in the early hours of April 18, Mr Prayitno said.

The cause of the incident is not yet known. There is no report of any oil spill.

The vessel’s owner, Trans Holdings Bhd in Malaysia, has been approached for comment.
