ONE expands refrigerated fleet to meet cargo demands
Japanese container venture said addition will help protect the environment and human health
ONE’s 6,500 expansion units will use waterborne paint that can reduce emissions of smog-causing volatile organic compounds by 80-90%
OCEAN Network Express is adding another 6,500 new units to its refrigerated container fleet to meet the growing demand for cargo.
The Japanese global refrigerated carrier expects demand for containerised reefer trade to continue growing this year and its fleet expansion reflects its strong commitment to meet this rising demand, it said in a statement.
It said the expansion marks ONE’s commitment to protect the environment and human health.
Instead of using traditional pollution-causing solvent-borne paint, the new units will have waterborne paint applied instead.
The use of waterborne paint will help reduce by 80-90% the emissions of volatile organic compounds which can pollute the environment and cause smog that adversely impacts air quality and visibility.
The company is also looking at state-of-the-art technology to enhance cargo care during the entire voyage of its vessels.
ONE is now considering the application of the latest Internet of Things technology into its fleet of reefer containers which provides real-time visibility of critical information such as the temperature and humidity inside the container. It said the expansion will include 500 units that are equipped with advanced controlled atmosphere technology.
ONE managing director for marketing and commercial Hiroki Tsujii said the additional investment in new reefer containers reflects its commitment to the refrigerated cargo segment.
“We maintain one of the largest and youngest reefer fleets in the world, equipped with the most advanced technologies designed to handle perishable cargo demand,” he said. “As a socially responsible company and leader in the industry, we are also doing our part for the environment by using waterborne paint which reduces VOC emissions.”
