Rusting Yemen tanker threatens to dwarf Mauritius spill

Beirut blast and Mauritian oil spill highlight need to prevent a spill or explosion on the abandoned floating storage ship Safer, held as a bargaining chip by Yemen’s Houthi rebels and risking a potential catastrophe in the Red Sea

The International Maritime Organization is drawing up a response plan in case of an oil spill from Safer, which would dwarf that of Wakashio off Mauritius. The floating storage vessel, which has been left to rust off Ras Isa since 2015, has 1.1m barrels of oil on board
