Busy lanes Hamburg’s inland container traffic soars
CONTAINERS moved by inland waterways to and from the port of Hamburg grew 29% to 119,000 teu in 2008. Total tonnage on the waterways was 12.2m tonnes, a 1.5% increase on the previous year. In Germany as a whole, the shipment of goods by inland waterways in 2008 dropped 1.6%. Hamburg port described the significant increase in containers as “a success for the companies involved and for the numerous inland ports along the Elbe and the north German canal network”.
