Sutton Harbour Harbour Directions 2018

Sutton Harbour Company, as a Statutory Harbour Authority for Sutton Harbour in Plymouth, was designated with powers of Harbour Direction on 6 April 2015. Following this designation and a public consultation carried out in accordance with the Harbour Directions Code of Conduct, Sutton Harbour Company has now given new Harbour Directions which came into force on 21 November 2018.

Harbour Directions

The new SUTTON HARBOUR HARBOUR DIRECTIONS 2018 regulate ships within Sutton Harbour, or entering or leaving the harbour through the Lock. They relate to the movement, mooring and unmooring, equipment and manning of ships. The directions include: Compliance with the Collision Regulations; Speed Limits; Navigating under influence of alcohol or drugs; Reporting Collisions and Sunk or Grounded Ships; Unseaworthy Ships; Manning by competent persons; Lights impeding safe navigation; Mooring and anchoring; Obstruction of Aids to Navigation; Obstructions of public landings; Fishing within harbour areas; Open fires on board a Ship; Discharge of Oil; Sewage and Waste; Refuelling in the Harbour; Notification of Arrival; and Departure and Automatic and Back-up Steering Gear.

Who do they apply to?

Harbour Directions apply to ships as defined in the Harbours Act 1964. This Act defines a ship as including every description of vessel used in navigation, seaplanes and hovercraft. It is the responsibility of the Master of the Ship to ensure that Harbour Directions are complied with. Breach of a Harbour Direction without reasonable excuse is a criminal offence and a person guilty of the offence is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale.
