Why smart ports will be a game-changer for shipping

The South Asia, Middle East and Africa region could see trade expansion through port infrastructure investment. Lloyd’s List asks if smart ports are the future of regional growth

Join two panels of experts at the Lloyd’s List Smart Ports Forum, to be held in Dubai on November 20, to hear how ‘smart’ can be a game-changer for ports, and how smart ports will be a game-changer for trade

The Smart Port is critical to the success of the logistics business, although ports in general have long been seen as a bottleneck in the chain rather than a digitalised hub. As shipping is driven increasingly by data analytics, so must ports join the network as equal partners. Failure to do this will negatively disrupt shipping’s future.

So what immediate opportunities are presented by smart solutions? Where is data already making a difference, and what are the possibilities offered by next-generation connectivity for the port sector? Is blockchain the impetus needed to transform maritime-port connections? If so, will that be in five years or 10 years?

What will the future port look like? How will ports embrace the 4th industrial revolution, as characterised by AI, robotics, secure networks and automation? How will digitalisation drive change in ports’ business models, and what will that mean for investment in infrastructure and superstructure, for connectivity, and for careers?

This forum will bring together ports’ policymakers, vessel operators and technology specialists in two panel discussions about the port of the future, its place in the logistics supply chain, the investment and employment required and the impact on ports of evolving global decarbonisation.

Attendees will get a clear view of both the immediate and near-future for the Smart Port which will be of critical importance in the development of diversifying and maturing economies in South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The Lloyd’s List Smart Ports Forum will tackle the future of the SAMEA ports. Join our expert panel to hear how ‘smart’ can be a game-changer for ports, and how smart ports will be a game-changer for trade.
