The Lloyds List Podcast: Migrant Crisis

On this week's podcast: a diplomatic row erupted earlier this week over Italy and Malta's refusal to take a rescue vessel carrying 629 people. As the vessel heads towards Spain we talk to International Chamber of Shipping secretary-general Peter Hinchliffe about the moral obligations of EU member states to help people in distress and the potential fallout for merchant shipping in the Mediterranean

Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s new weekly podcast — your weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping in the week ahead

FOLLOWING a diplomatic furore this week when Italy and Malta refused to take in a vessel full of migrants in the Mediterranean, International Chamber of Shipping secretary-general Peter Hinchliffe has called for joined up government in Europe to provide a policy, and a long term strategy, on migration by sea.

"This is not something that is going to go away in a matter of weeks or years,'' he said, talking to to Lloyd's List editor Richard Meade and our Europe editor-in-chief Helen Kelly on this week's podcast. "We're going to be dealing with this for decades, so lets have politicians for once look outside their five year term of office and come up with some everlasting process that is going to end this loss of life."
