The Lloyd’s List Podcast: The week ahead

Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s new weekly podcast — your weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping in the week ahead

On this week’s podcast: How shipping can mitigate risk from Iranian sanctions | What’s happened to shipping’s toxic debt? | Cautious optimism or container line confusion?

WITH the usual elaborate stroke of his pen (and a few characters on Twitter), Donald Trump unilaterally pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran earlier this week, reimposing sanctions and a whole heap of risk for the shipping industry to mitigate.

While the immediate focus has been on the impact for oil markets, and the associated fallout for the tanker sector, the greater risk for shipping arguably lies in how the industry deals with credit finance headaches and the insurance implications of what looks likely to be a fragmented international sanctions regime.

Joining the Lloyd’s List editor Richard Meade on the Podcast this week to discuss these implications is Anthony Woolwich, partner and head of competition and regulation at the law firm HFW.

His advice, in short: “check your contracts!”. But if you want a more detailed response from one of the industry’s top lawyers on how to avoid getting caught out in the uncertainty, we highly recommend a listen here.

Also on this week’s edition:

• Our legal and insurance editor David Osler looks at what has happened to shipping’s toxic debt and what the latest mood music from within the German banks tell us about the availability of finance for shipping.

• Senior reporter and containers expert Linton Nightingale looks ahead at the agenda for next week’s box bonanza in Hamburg – the Global Liner Shipping Conference.

This podcast will be weekly production from Lloyd’s List and we are keen to hear your thoughts on where you think we should be focusing our attention.
