Shipping emissions double those compatible with Paris target
Failure to beef up the target by 2023 would mean decarbonisation has to happen too rapidly to be feasible, researchers said, pushing the already challenging Paris goals out of reach
A University of Manchester study found shipping must cut its emissions by 34% on 2008 levels by 2030 and net zero by 2050 if it is to be compatible with the Paris Agreement. It also called on the International Maritime Organization to formalise these targets at its 2023 strategy revision
