Australia detains Japanese car carrier with overdue crew

The vessel will not be allowed to sail from the port of Melbourne until a replacement crew arrives and the overdue crew are repatriated. The ITF warns owners it will crack down on vessels with beyond-contract seafarers

A number of seafarers on the vessel Metis Leader have been working on board in excess of the 11 months maximum permitted under the Maritime Labour Convention and the 14 months limit allowed by Australian authorities
