US ports boost throughput as global economy rebounds
Increased imports have been fuelled by $1trn of fiscal support the US government has given households through enhanced unemployment insurance, stimulus cheques and tax cuts
The US Commerce Department underlined a significant difference between imports and exports, saying the country posted its largest monthly trade deficit in more than a decade in August as imports of consumer goods set a new monthly record, while exports stalled.
