New Diamond owners to pay compensation to Sri Lanka
Owners of very large crude carrier New Diamond, which caught fire off Sri Lanka’s east coast on September 3, have agreed to settle a claim of $1.9m. They will pay Sri Lanka for assistance and firefighting efforts tendered to the vessel
Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department has made a request to the owners for another 100m Rupees ($540,000) as compensation to avert a major disaster. Meanwhile salvors are still trying to identify a port for ship-to-ship transfer to offload the cargo of nearly 2m barrels of crude oil
