EU proposes asylum plan for migrants rescued at sea
A day after several shipping bodies called on the EU to help quickly disembark migrants rescued by merchant ships, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen unveils a plan aimed at breaking the bloc’s years-long impasse over asylum seekers
Plan includes a ‘solidarity mechanism’ that will cover disembarkation, but Ecsa says ships need reassurance that pre-screening of migrants mentioned in the proposal will be ‘preceded by a swift and safe disembarkation of the rescued persons at the nearest port’
