The Lloyd's List Podcast: Piracy in a time of coronavirus

Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s weekly podcast — your weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping

West African pirates clearly didn’t get the memo on social distancing. Undeterred by the global coronavirus pandemic, piracy is still rife and insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea in particular continues to blight the lives of seafarers working in the region. As the industry seeks to strength security measures with the latest publication of ‘Best Management Practice’ focused on the Gulf of Guinea hot-spot, the Podcast this week explores how seafarers are having to deal with yet another layer of risk. Joining the podcast this week we have Bimco’s head of safety and security Jakob Larsen and Stephen Askins, Partner at Tatham & Co - Maritime Solicitors

JUST because the rest of the world is in a coronavirus lockdown, pirates are not holding back and the threat, if anything is increasing in the security hot spots in the Gulf of Guinea.

With new containment measures at ports and hinterlands being imposed with little or no notice, seriously hampering crew changes and cargo operations, seafarers find themselves working under increasingly challenging conditions. So adding heightened security vigilance into the mix is unfortunate timing. And yet this week industry organizations, supported by government and military organizations, published the latest Best management practice guidelines – urging seafarers and shipping companies to take precautions seriously.

Joining Lloyd’s List Editor and regular Podcast host Richard Meade this week to discuss the new BMP guidance and assess the current risk levels is Bimco’s head of safety and security Jakob Larsen and the renowned piracy expert and lawyer Stephen Askins, Partner at Tatham & Co - Maritime Solicitors. As someone currently dealing with the hostage negotiation of several crew being held by pirates in the region, Mr Askins is only too aware of how much more difficult the coronavirus lockdown is making the situation for everyone.
