Bay Area council bans coal operations at port
The Richmond ordinance targets a port operated by Levin-Richmond Terminal Corporation, which shipped nearly 1m tonnes of coal to Japan and South Korea in 2018
The city council’s decision comes as US coal producers face declining domestic demand and seek export markets as a way to advance their businesses and avoid stranded assets
