The Lloyd's List Podcast: Have mandatory speed limits hit a road block?

Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s weekly podcast — your weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping

The campaign for mandatory speed limits for shipping suffered a blow during technical talks at IMO this week. For some that is crucial mistake and a missed opportunity. For others it is an effective strategy to reduce emissions. In this week's podcast we get the view from both sides: Danish Shipping director Maria Skipper Schwenn and Transport & Environment shipping analyst Faig Abbasov explain what the future is for decarbonisation

DECARBONISATION of the shipping industry was never going to be quick and painless. Neither was making the rules to slash emissions.

A technical meeting at the International Maritime Organization in London this week appears to have delivered its verdict on what kind of measures the industry should take in the future, leaving some satisfied and others disappointed.

These choices, however, are far from the end of the story or the determining factor in shipping’s emissions trajectory. What they are is another significant step towards the future regulations that will define this industry over the coming decades.

This week we sat down with two people involved in the IMO negotiations, representing different interests and coming out of this meeting with contrasting reactions, to explain what has happened and why it matters; Danish Shipping executive director Maria Skipper Schwenn and Transport & Environment shipping manager Faig Abbasov.
