The Lloyd’s List Podcast: IUMI 2019

Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s weekly podcast — your weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping in the week ahead

The annual marine insurance bun-fight that is IUMI may not be everyone’s idea of a party, but there was a palpable undercurrent of optimism rippling through the actuaries and analysts this year. Our crack squad of risky reporters managed to grab a few words with such luminaries as Nick Shaw, chief executive of the International Group of P&I Clubs, Astrid Seltmann of Cefor, and Lars Lange, IUMI’s Hamburg-based secretary-general

THE marine insurance industry staged its annual get-together in Toronto this week, and while the IUMI conference is not what anyone would call an excitable gathering, there was a palpable undercurrent of optimism.

The big news of the week is that global marine premiums in 2018 rose for the second year in succession, growing 1% to hit $28.9bn, and that comes after a 2% gain in 2017.

Perspective is needed here; there is a lot of ground to make up before the sector sees a restoration of the $33.4bn premium tally clocked up five years ago.

But yes, it’s a step in the right direction.

Lloyd’s List sent not one but two journalists to the conference this year, with David Osler there to report and Michelle Bockmann giving a presentation herself before lending Dave a hand.

They have been talking to some of the key IUMI players, including IUMI’s secretary-general Lars Lange, the chief executive of the International Group of P&I Clubs Nick Shaw, and Astrid Seltmann of Cefor and vice-chair of the facts and figures committee.
