Russia ups the ante with a new icebreaker for the Arctic
The Project 22220 icebreakers will be used mainly to clear passages for commercial ship traffic on the Northern Sea Route, which runs along Russia’s Arctic coast from the Kara Sea to the Bering Strait
News of the icebreaker’s launch will not be well received in the US, where concerns have been mounting over Moscow’s intentions in the Arctic, as well as its efforts to promote China’s interests in the region
