West African ports slow on the low-sulphur uptake

While long-established ports serving the major trades are moving fast to ensure customers’ fuel requirements for low-sulphur are facilitated, there are fears that those in the developing world are struggling to keep up. West African ports may struggle to meet fuel demand when the IMO 2020 rules on emissions take effect

With a lack of low-sulphur bunkering available to carriers, they will be forced to bunker elsewhere, says consultant Dr Natalie Gupta. Juggling networks to cater for the fuel shortage could therefore be a potential headache for carriers operating in the region during the first few years of the regulation
