Los Angeles appoints Diane Middleton as port commissioner
The expert in labour and maritime law is expected to reflect the interests of the labour unions on the five-member Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners. She will assume the vacancy created in January by the death of Dave Arian
Ms Middleton has her own practice in San Pedro, California, representing injured longshoremen and shipyard workers, including many victims of asbestos poisoning
