We put regulator International Maritime Organization secretary-general Kitack Lim at the very top of our global ranking to reflect how 2018 was a pivotal moment in the maritime industry’s history as game-changing environmental regulations such as Sulphur 2020, Ballast Water Management and Decarbonisation 2050 ushered in a new era of shipping and trade.
The ongoing US-Sino trade war also coloured the ranking this year, pushing Cosco Shipping Group's Xu Lirong and China Merchants Group's Li Jianhong down the ranking by a couple of places. Given that China’s ambitions have been curbed, at least for now, by US President Donald Trump’s ratcheting up of trade tariffs, other Chinese executives have also dipped down, including Hu Xiaolian from the Export-Import Bank of China. How long that situation lasts is anyone’s guess, but there is no doubt that a very different political relationship will exist between the world’s two leading economies by the time it all plays out.
As always this year’s ranking reflects the most powerful shipowners, with AP Moller-Maersk's Robert Uggla, John Angelicoussis and John Fredriksen vying for position with Paddy Rodgers and Rodolphe Saadé. But we expect our list will look very different in years to come as the big changes, regulatory and trade, work their way through the global industry.
