“How can you ignore 50% of the opportunity of employment in maritime — which is women? It doesn't make sense" — Sue Terpilowski.
INSPIRED by Women in Finance and Women in Tech, Sue Terpilowski OBE has brought together a Women in Maritime Taskforce, alongside Maritime UK and the Department for Transport.
It is working on a Women in Shipping charter that UK businesses can sign up to, with free tool kits and support, to help companies gain the financial benefits of a better gender balance. The journey starts with a ‘pledge’ to look at gender diversity and pay within the industry. Companies can sign that at Seaworks in Southampton on July 6.
“We are really keen that this is for everybody from micro businesses right up to the big players,” she said.
A benchmarking exercise will create for the first time hard data on numbers of women employed in UK maritime, in what roles and at what level within the industry.
