London, Jan 22 -- A press report, dated today, states: Flinders Island is facing a transport crisis after receivers were appointed yesterday for the State Government-contracted shipping operator Southern Shipping. Stock agents said there was a huge backlog of 750 cattle and 5000 sheep needing to be transported off Flinders Island. And neighbouring Cape Barren Island, which relies on its monthly shipping delivery, is running desperately short of groceries and diesel. PKF chartered accountants were appointed as Southern Shipping's receivers by the Commonwealth Bank. Southern Shipping already had its two vessels off the Flinders Island run before yesterday's turn of events. Passenger ro/ro Matthew Flinders III (298 gt, built 1995) is under the detention of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the Southern Condor II has been suspended by Marine and Safety Tasmania until an oil leak is fixed.
