FOR a long time, the only shipbuilder in Leer was the subsidiary of Dutch shipyard Ferus Smit. In 2006, a new player entered the field when shipyard Nesse-Werft took over the facilities of the former Jansen-Werft. Partners in the yard are owner Roelf Briese and Holger Behrenwald (whois also managing director), with a 40%stake each.
