THAT the business of managing public emotion has become big business is demonstrated by the manipulated reactions to the plight of the unfortunate McCanns. Publicly-aired and uninformed judgments derive from a very primitive part of us, so that heartless outbursts by newspaper commentators and prize-winning authors ought not to surprise us.
