HELLENIC Seaways, the largest ferry line in Greece’s domestic trades, has inaugurated its latest vessel, the locally constructed ro-pax vessel Nissos Chios, writes Nigel Lowry. The 26-knot ferry, which has capacity for 1,800 passengers and 418 cars, was christened in a naming ceremony in the port of Piraeus on Monday evening. The vessel will initially operate between Piraeus and Crete for about 20 days until it is substituted by the ship that will regularly ply that route. Nissos Chios will then switch to its own regular service, operating between Piraeus and the eastern Aegean islands of Chios and Mytilene. The vessel is a sister ship to Nissos Mykonos, which was introduced in late-2005 and last year scooped the ‘Ship of the Year’ prize at the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards.
