AS the year drew to a close, with doom-laden headlines multiplying and Somalian pirates intent on asserting their mastery of the Gulf of Aden — even knocking off four ships in one productive day — there was not a great deal to cheer us. Which is why the splendid defence of the Chinese crane ship Zhenhua VI was doubly inspirational stuff, and why Peng Weiyuan deserves a medal.
