The sea and me
HOW do you ever get a taster of the sea experience, to determine if you might get on with this rather different career? It is not easy at all these days. I had shipmates whose fathers had packed them off on a coaster as a cabin boy, or even up to Iceland as a deckie-learner on a trawler. They probably thought that this extreme seafaring would put them off for ever and they would settle down to that respectable job in the bank or accountants’ office. I spent some time on a dredger and liked it immensely.
