Alarm over ‘inconsistent’ EU port inspections
IN HIS opening address to the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee on November 29, 2006, secretary-general Efthimios Mitropoulos stated: “I have concerns stemming from reports I have seen [on port security], most recently from a report by the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs titled ‘Ports and Supply Chain Security Initiatives in the US and Abroad’. This says it became clear just how inconsistent ISPS [International Ship and Port Facility Security Code] is from port to port and country to country. While the language of ISPS is uniform in each port and each country, it was as if we were seeing several different codes.”
