ON OCTOBER 15, 2009, the European Commission formally accepted various commitments offered by the International Association of Classification Societies in response to the commission’s preliminary finding that the organisation had restricted competition in the market for ship classification. The commission had alleged that the IACS’ membership criteria, rules and procedures infringed Article 81 of the EC Treaty and Article 53 of the EEA Agreement.
