WE DO not like to think too far ahead in our industry. I still treasure an incident from a huge conference held about six months before the International Safety Management Code was due to bite, when an eminent shipowner stood up and asked if somebody could tell him what the three initials ISM actually stood for. “Never concern yourself today with what can be put off until tomorrow”, is a sort of industry maxim.
