A SENIOR European shipping figure has called on national governments and the European Union to take advantage of the current economic crisis to promote renewal of Europe’s ageing shortsea fleet. Niko Wijnolst, chairman of the European Network of Maritime Clusters, wants governments and the EU to back a scheme to enable European countries with younger fleets to buy new vessels and sell their existing ones to countries operating older ships.
