Labour Disputes - August 20

Karachi, Aug 20 -- The casual staff of the stevedores of Mongla port, Bangladesh, reportedly called off their strike following a meeting with the port officials and the representatives of the two stevedores' associations at the Khalishpur Port Club under the Chairmanship of Mongla Port Authority Commodore M.Faruque. The meeting decided to form a committee to look into the demands of the strikers and suggest measures for their solution. The demands of the stevedores' casual staff included the restoration of the old pool system for engaging the casual staff on board the vessels on a rotation basis, payment of pending dress allowances and festival bonuses. -- Correspondent.
