Piracy - June 10
London, Jun 10 -- A press report, dated today, states: Seventeen suspected pirates arrived in Kenya this morning on board a US navy ship. The ship carrying the suspects, USS Gettysburg , docked at berth 1 of the Mombasa port at about 1030. Port OCPD, Ayub Ali said that the pirates were arrested May 13 by US navy officers as they attempted to attack merchant vessel Amira , which was headed to Alexandra, Egypt. Among the weapons recovered from the suspects include six AK47 rifles, 300 rounds of amunition, a Somali sword among others. This is the largest batch handed over to Kenya so far. 101 suspects are currently on trial while another 10 are already serving their seven year jail term at Mombasa's Shimo La Tewa prison. The 17 will be taken to Malindi court tomorrow. The latest arrival comes barely a day after seven pirates were charged on yesterday in Mombasa.
